about

The tune is from the song Mariam Mater Virginem found in the C14th Libre Vermell. The text is C10th and its origins are unclear but current thought has it authored in Saltzberg or the monastery of St Gall. What is clear is that this Marian hymn was very popular during the middle ages and was set to music many times. We only sing the first verse here, there are another six

lyrics

Ave, maris stella,
Dei mater alma,
atque semper virgo,
felix cœli porta.

Hail, star of the sea,
Nurturing Mother of God,
And who is ever Virgin
Happy gate of Heaven
